After graduating from St. Albert's School in Antwerp, he worked as a journalist. He made his debut in literature as a storyteller at the age of 16. This was followed by detective stories written together with the journalist Sintaire (Hermann Sartini). The first independent detective story is the novel "Danger" (1929). In 1931, the book "Six Dead Men" ("Six", "Last of Six") received the Grand Prix of French detective literature. The writer's serial character is investigator Wenceslas Vorobeichik. Being a talented draftsman, Steeman often illustrated his works himself. In the post-war years, experiencing health problems, Steeman moved to the south of France, where he wrote several novels. His literary activity ceased in 1962, 8 years before his death in Meudon. Steeman's books have been translated into many languages, and a dozen films have been made based on them.
