But when Prince Dmitry, only nine years old, inherited the Moscow table, it seemed to many that Rus' was living out its last days - the Horde yoke, princely strife and terrible epidemics put the Russian people on the brink of life and death. The fate of the country was decided in 1380 on the Kulikovo Field, where Prince Dmitry Ivanovich fought as a simple warrior - in ordinary armor, without guards, in the thick of hand-to-hand combat. And although this great victory did not destroy the Horde oppression (just two years later Tokhtamysh burned Moscow), it was in the Battle of Kulikovo, under the leadership of Prince Dmitry, that Rus' proved its right to exist and a great future.
