About the book: year / In 1936, the novel “The False Nero” was published in Amsterdam - the work of the outstanding German writer Lion Feuchtwanger, who had recently published the first and second parts of the epic Josephus Trilogy. The plot touched upon while working on this monumental historical canvas about the ancient Roman historian of Jewish origin inspired Feuchtwanger to devote a separate novel to the story of the potter Terence, who declared himself to be miraculously saved by Emperor Nero. To this day, this compact novel, which came into being almost by accident, remains one of the most beloved in Feuchtwanger’s creative legacy for many of his admirers. The novel “Jephthah and His Daughter,” also included in the collection, is in many ways the pinnacle of Feuchtwanger’s work. It again echoes the Jewish theme, which more or less clearly found expression in most of his works. But, in addition, this novel is the fruit of many years of thinking about the fate of the biblical Jephthah, which struck the author in childhood, about the tragic confrontation of a person with a fatal coincidence of circumstances.
