About the book: 2018 / The work of Caucasus historian, candidate of historical sciences M. M. Vachagaev is dedicated to one of the little-known pages of recent Russian history - the attempt the creation of an independent state of the mountain people of the North Caucasus during the Civil War in Russia 1917–1920. Using extensive archival material, including documents from the archives of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkey, France, and Russia, the author analyzed the vicissitudes of the short but turbulent history of the state formation of the highlanders - one of many quasi-states formed on the ruins of the Russian Empire. The book examines the circumstances of the proclamation of the Mountain Republic, its status and political orientation in the diplomatic and military confrontation between the main factors of intervention and the Civil War in Russia, the personal composition of the leadership of the Republic, the causes and consequences of the collapse of the separatist project in the North Caucasus.
