About the book: 2021 / This book is an interesting overview of the development of engineering in Western history civilization from its origins to the twentieth century. The authors focus on the achievements that, in their opinion, are the most important and have had the greatest impact on the development of human civilization, citing magnificent examples of masterpieces of creative engineering. These are the hanging gardens of Babylon; construction of Egyptian pyramids and temples; the ingenious mechanisms of Archimedes; complex pipeline and bridge structures; tunnels laid in the mountains and dug under water; channels; steamships; locomotives - in a word, everything that requires extensive technical knowledge, experience and courage. The authors explain the purpose of the inventions, give detailed descriptions of the components and how they interact, report the main dimensions, and give an idea of the construction or assembly technology. The review ends with an essay on the impact of engineering on society, which argues that technology should contribute to the enhancement of ethical and aesthetic values. The book is richly illustrated and written in simple, accessible language, not burdened with a large number of technical terms and details. The publishing layout is preserved in PDF A4 format.
