About the book: 2020 / Boris Beta (Butkevich, 1895–1931) is one of the most prominent authors of the Far East and the “Chinese” branch of emigration. A hussar, a participant in the First World War and the Civil War, a bohemian writer, a tramp and a wanderer, B. Beta traveled to many countries as a steamship fireman, worked as a longshoreman and a shepherd in France and ended his days in poverty in a Marseilles hospital bed. Although Beta’s literary works were appreciated and noted by I. Bunin, V. Khodasevich, N. Berberova and many others, during his lifetime he was never honored with his own book, and his stories and poems remained scattered for many decades on the pages of Far Eastern, Chinese and European newspapers and magazines. The two-volume collected works of B. Beta, which we first published in 2018, are supplemented in this edition with eight stories and a number of poems and short poems, including the first publications on manuscripts.
