About the book: 2022 / Roald Amundsen, the great Norwegian explorer, was the first to conquer the South Pole, the first to make the trans-Arctic flight Spitsbergen - North pole - Alaska, the first (with three winterings!) to overcome the Northwest Passage from east to west. He flew out in search of the crashed airship "Italy" on a seaplane and did not return, disappearing without a trace in the cold Arctic waters... Everyone knows this Amundsen. However, in his biography there is a fact that is not so well known to the general public - the story of his adoption of two Chukchi girls, Nita Kakot and Camilla Carpendale. This book tells about the life path of Nita and Camilla, about how their fate was intricately intertwined with the fate of Amundsen himself, about the reasons why he had to return the girls to their homeland. The author is based not only on documentary sources, but also on personal impressions from a trip to the places where the girls lived during their travels.
