About the book: year / Dobrolyubov used a peculiar critical technique in this review. He pretends that he does not agree with the opinion of critics that Lvov’s comedy is another unsuccessful attempt to create the image of an ideal official, and considers the play as a parody of the same “Official”, and the image of the main character not as lifeless and strained, but as alive and typical. This technique allows Dobrolyubov to talk not about a weak comedy, but about a real life phenomenon that was reflected in it against the will of the author. The critic here makes fun of a type of phrase-monger that is deeply antipathetic to him, a person with formal, confirmed beliefs, as well as the widespread mentality of the second half of the 1850s, which is characterized by a superficial understanding of the nature of social evil and belief in easy ways to overcome it.
