At the center of the story is the Kazantsev family - Don Cossacks. The father and mother remained in the farmstead occupied by the Germans and Italians, and the sons were at the front. The eldest son began the war as a company commander, and in the battles for the Dnieper he became the commander of a rifle division. The youngest son is a brave sapper, whose courage and skill more than once saved both himself and his colleagues.
