About the book: year / Patrick Quentin is the collective pseudonym of two American authors Richard Wilson Webb (1901-1970) and Hugh Callingham Wheeler) (1912-1987). The pseudonym first appeared during Webb's collaboration with the writer Martha Maude Kelly, known among friends as Patsy. By adding his nickname Rick to Patsy's first syllable, they publish two detective novels. The pseudonym remains with Webb and in collaboration with another author - Mary Louise Aswell. Patrick Quentin became famous when he began working together with the Englishman Hugh Wheeler, who emigrated to the United States. Under the pseudonym Patrick Quentin, they publish a series of novels starring amateur detective Peter Duluth. Under the pseudonym Jonathan Stage, a series with Dr. Hugh Westlake is published. The pseudonym Q.Patrick is used to sign novels about Lieutenant Timothy Trent. The early works, signed by the pseudonym Q. Patrick, are fully in the tradition of the Golden Age detective story with its "whodunit" tendencies, and contain mystery plots reminiscent of the books of Agatha Christie or John Dickson Carr. Over time, writers write works that are more realistic, psychological, and more focused on describing characters. And since 1944, their works have increasingly moved away from detective stories towards thrillers (for example, Puzzle for Fiends - a Hitchcockian thriller, Puzzle for Pilgrims - a classic noir), and spy novels (for example, Run to Death). During this time, incredibly popular cross-cutting characters were created - Peter Duluth, a World War II veteran and recovering alcoholic, and his wife; Inspector Timothy Trant from the New York Police, a graduate of Princeton, investigating the hardball tradition in the style of novels; country doctor Dr. Hugh Cavendish Westlake with daughter Dawn. Patrick Quentin's later works are exceptionally dark and dark. They contain unbearable pictures of hopelessness, betrayal, adultery, and these themes become central to them, displacing the criminal outline. And although the murderers are punished in the end, the books leave a heavy aftertaste. In 1952, Webb, seriously ill, gave up writing. Hugh Wheeler continued to write detective stories until 1965. Then he switched to writing plays, scripts for musicals, and returned to detective work only in 1972 to work on a television script based on his work. Contents:1. Patrick Quentin: Six days in Reno 2.
