About the book: 1970 / Jose Maria Eza de Queiroz (1845–1900) is a world-famous classic of Portuguese literature of the 19th century. In the novel The Crime of Padre Amaro, Queiroz depicted the tragic consequences of sinful passion that united a priest and his young sensual parishioner. Father Amaro meets the charming young Amelia, whose religiosity soon begins to drown in an ever-growing attraction to the new priest... The image of Carlos Fradique Mendez was the joint brainchild of Esa de Queiroz, Antero de Quental and J. Batalha Reis. Young writers who were part of the so-called “Lisbon Cenacle” created an imaginary “satanic” poet, came up with a biography of him and in 1869 published several poems in the newspaper “September Revolution”, signing them with the name “K. Fradique Mendes.” The publication includes the novels of the Portuguese writer Esa de Queiroz (1845–1900) “The Crime of Padre Amaro” and “Correspondence of Fradique Mendes.” Introductory article by M.
