About the book: 2005 / The story “The Turn of the Screw” became a kind of “calling card” of James the novelist and was awarded numerous film adaptations. The original interpretation of the motive for meeting ghosts brought the story closer to the parapsychological issues popular in James’s era. Having outgrown the “Gothic” plot, “The Turn of the Screw” turned into a philosophical study about the complexity of the world order and the paradoxes of human perception, and its author came close to the “stream of consciousness” technique, which was developed in modernist prose. This mysterious ghost story is as ambiguous as Pushkin's The Queen of Spades, Hoffmann's The Sandman or Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher. The residents of Bly Manor are haunted by nightmares; Eyewitness testimony is subjective, nothing directly and certainly does not indicate who exactly the criminal is... Could everything that is happening be a hoax or hallucinations? In any case, without noticing it, you become a participant in a “witch hunt.” Translation: Nina Darouzes
