MediaDB / «Suttree" Cormac McCarthy: download fb2, read online
About the book: 2024 / Cormac McCarthy is a modern American classic of the main caliber, laureate of the MacArthur Fellowship for Genius, a master of complex experiences and non-standard syntax, well known to our readers for his novels “No Country for Old Men” (the Coen brothers’ film based on this book received four Oscars) and “The Road” (received a Pulitzer Prize and was also filmed), “Border Trilogy” (the first novel of which, “Horses, Horses...”, received National Book Award and was brought to the screen by Billy Bob Thornton, starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz) and Blood Meridian. A special place in his legacy is occupied by the epic tragicomedy “Suttree” - “an unthinkable - and, moreover, completely organic - combination of James Joyce’s Ulysses and John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row” (New York Times), “virtually an autobiography” of the famous recluse. So, the setting is Knoxville, Tennessee; It's the 1950s. Cornelius Suttree, the scion of a wealthy family, for unknown reasons, left his wife and little son and settled in a houseboat on the river. He eats fish that he caught himself, drinks everything that is on fire (and that his friends bring), spends his time “in the company of thieves, renegades, scoundrels... slackers, rude people, pantywomen, murderers, gamblers, pimps... boobies, scammers... and others various and malicious dirty tricks", but does not lose human dignity and looks at the world with detached spontaneity. For the first time in Russian! Obscene language is used.
