MediaDB / «Ecclesiastical history of the people of the Angles" Bede the Venerable: download fb2, read online
About the book: 2001 / This translation of the "Ecclesiastical history of the people of the Angles" into Russian is the first (not counting several passages in anthologies). It is based on the edition of B. Colgrave and verified with other authoritative publications. The appendix provides translations of several monuments from the 6th-9th centuries, which seem to frame the “History”. Bede's letter to Egbert is an example of the historian's epistolary style and gives an idea of his views on the situation of the contemporary English Church. A letter from Bede's student Cuthbert introduces us more closely to the personality of the creator of the History. Gildas's essay "On the Ruin of Britain" is a unique historical monument, practically the only written source on the history of Britain in the 5th-6th centuries. Finally, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, recorded at the end of the 9th century, in turn takes Bede’s History as a basis, supplementing it with information from other sources. The translation of all these works and, above all, the “History” itself is intended to better acquaint the domestic reader with the almost unknown historical tradition of England in the early Middle Ages.
