About the book: 2014 / Only two commanders were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. The first is Alexander Nevsky, the second is Fyodor Ushakov. The Act of his canonization says: “The strength of his Christian spirit was manifested not only by glorious victories in battles for the Fatherland, but also in great mercy, which even the enemy he defeated was amazed... the mercy of Admiral Fyodor Ushakov covered everyone..." It's true: the largest Russian naval commander who did not lose at sea - like the great Suvorov - on land! - not a single battle, Admiral Fedor Fedorovich Ushakov (1745-1817), possessing all the qualities of an outstanding military leader, strategist and diplomat, was completely devoid of contempt for human life. Neither the excitement of the battle, nor the fierceness of the enemy, nor the need to inflict the greatest damage on him, nothing could make the glorious admiral forget about the main thing: battles are not fought to exterminate people, but to end the war. The Turks, repeatedly beaten by the Russian admiral, called him with respect and fear “ Ushak Pasha." It was all the main battles of the Russian-Turkish War that Ushakov won that led to the conclusion of the Iasi Peace Treaty, which assigned to Russia the entire Northern Black Sea region, including Crimea, and significantly strengthened Russia’s political positions in the Caucasus and the Balkans. After the victorious end of the war, Emperor Paul appointed F. F. Ushakov commander of the Russian naval forces in the Mediterranean. His task was to support the troops of the anti-French coalition. During the Mediterranean campaign of 1798-1800. Ushakov proved himself to be a major naval commander, a skilled politician and diplomat, and showed examples of organizing interaction between the army and navy. The successes of the Russian naval commander were so impressive that it aroused the acute jealousy of his British counterpart, the famous Admiral Nelson. Ushakov was called “Suvorov at sea.” That is why the need of the domestic reader to get to know this brilliant military leader and great man is so urgent. In this book, the famous Admiral Fyodor Fedorovich Ushakov appears before the reader both as the author and as the main character of the story. Documents from the pen of the great Russian naval commander are successfully complemented by a story about the vicissitudes of his life full of dangers and help to understand why this stern warrior was numbered among the saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.
