    About the book: 1983 / In the novel "Witnesses" Simenon addresses the theme of trial by jury. A certain Lambert is accused of murdering his cohabitant. Considering the case, the experienced chairman of the court, Loman, accidentally puts himself in the place of the defendant and is horrified to realize that he too could be convicted on the basis of the circumstantial evidence and changeable testimony on which the accusation against Lambert was based. By coincidence and a number of their coincidences, the jury, after the death of Loman's wife, could have come to the conclusion that he was guilty of murder. And Loman sees the unsuitability of this judicial institution for correctly deciding the fate of a person who finds himself in the dock.
