About the book: year / The book by Efim Dymman, an employee of the Petersburg Police Gazette, is excellent “self-exposing” satirical material for Dobrolyubov. “The stupidest book,” according to Dobrolyubov, should have been subjected to meticulous analysis, because it naively and straightforwardly expressed the “well-intentioned” morality that prevailed in society. The critic uses his favorite polemical technique: in his ironic presentation, the worldly wisdom of “seeking and pleasing” reveals its true face. Dobrolyubov turned the review into a sermon of revolutionary morality.
