The hero's primary task is to survive, being a constant target of assassins, and only then he will be able to fight Sarevok and, who knows, encroach on his father's throne himself. And the hero will be helped in this by many adventurers who you can take (or not take) into your team: the simple-minded ranger Minsk with his tame hamster Boo, the experienced traveler Jaheira, the naive girl Imoen, the treacherous magician Edwin, the annoying dark elf Viconia and many others.
