M.'s novels abound with descriptions of sea battles and ship life: “Peter Simple” (1834), “Midshipman Easy” (1836) and others. In the novels “Jacob the Faithful” (1834) and “Snarleygou, or the Devil Dog” (1837), his talent as a humorist and writer of everyday life was revealed. After a trip to the USA, he published “An American Diary” (1839), containing criticism of the country’s political system.
