Livanov, somewhat reminiscent in style and content of "Cursed Days" by Bunin and Gorky’s “Untimely Thoughts” is a unique document of the era - an accurate and impartial description of the daily life of a provincial town in the center of Russia in the post-revolutionary years. The book, published in the year of the centenary of the upheavals of 1917, sounds like a kind of warning: the implementation of revolutionary slogans turns into a catastrophic destruction of the destinies of a huge number of people, the rapid degradation of cultural, social and family values, the degeneration of traditional forms of life, total violence and general destruction. For the first time, excerpts from the diaries were published by Yu. M. Kublanovsky in the magazine “New World” in 2003 and were highly appreciated by S. P. Zalygin and A. I. Solzhenitsyn. In this edition, Dr. Livanov’s notes are published in full for the first time.
