About the book: 1987 / Together with the heroes of the story by the young Icelandic writer G. Arason, the Icelandic boys, you will travel to the distant island of Iceland in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, right next to Arctic Circle. Iceland is an amazing country: there are mountains and huge glaciers everywhere, the largest in all of Europe, and next to them hot water boils and bubbles, steam rises straight from the ground - these are the famous geysers, there are at least eight hundred of them in Iceland. And more volcanoes, many, many volcanoes. People can only live here near the ocean coast, where there are green pastures and food for domestic animals, especially sheep. There are very few Icelanders - only 240 thousand people. These are the descendants of those Norwegians who discovered the island more than a thousand years ago and began to move here. Although it is never particularly cold on the island, thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, it is never really warm. Only grass grows, potatoes are difficult to grow, it is useless to plant bread, and fruits can only ripen in greenhouses. For many centuries, the Icelanders have always been helped by the sea - there is a lot of fish in the coastal waters, the Icelanders caught this fish, ate it fresh and dried it to eat during the difficult winter months, when all the livestock often died. And today, nine out of ten people are employed in fish production or processing. And of course, the most cherished dream of every Icelandic boy is to have his own boat and fish on his own. About all this is the story of G. Arason with wonderful illustrations by our artist O. G. Vereisky, who is well acquainted with Iceland. Vladimir Yakub
