About the book: 1998 / Red Light. I stopped. Beyond the intersection the street became busier and better lit. The sparse shops with bright windows gave it a cheerful look. Green light. Everything will happen in ten seconds. I would find myself in the most incredible story, but nothing, absolutely nothing around me foreshadowed this. The surrounding world was monstrously calm and innocent. About two hundred meters ahead the next traffic light was visible, the red light was still on. Just beyond the intersection there was a large black Mercedes. The driver had just gotten out of it and was leaning on the door, facing the traffic. It looked like he was about to cross the road. But he could have done it now: the path was clear, and there was a zebra crossing in front of him. It's amazing how much you can experience and change your mind in a short time. Within a few seconds I noticed the car, looked at the man and realized that he was hesitating. I even had time to be surprised by his pose. When the light turned green, there was about fifteen meters between me and the man at the crossing. But still, having started, I immediately slowed down, because I thought whether this man would decide to cross the street right now. But he still continued to stand and only peered unusually intently at me. As I released the brake pedal, I caught his gaze through the windshield. I was struck by the intensity of this look: the blue eyes were wide open, as if in some kind of ecstasy. There was something elusive in them - fear, compulsion. But everything happened so quickly, so lightning fast! The nervous spasm that made me tremble lasted longer than the exchange of glances. glances. I was already approaching the person...
