And this reason, as they were sure, was a very contagious heresy, which was constantly spreading and threatening the future of Christianity in Spain. The Inquisition was created to crush heresy and, if possible, destroy it by its roots. There were a number of reasons why this belief became deeply ingrained in literature and public opinion. The heresy referred to was the tendency towards Judaization, and the claim that it was extremely strong among the Marranos (also known as the converts, or "new Christians") seemed quite plausible.
