About the book: 1960 / "Visramiani" has its own centuries-old history. The theme of the exciting love of Vis and Ramin found its expression in the literature of the East, especially in Persian poetry, and then became the source of the Georgian prose novel “Visramiani”, written by the outstanding Georgian poet Sargis Tmogveli (late 12th century). The language of the novel is original and classically perfect. The popularity of the romantic story of Vis and Ramin has increasingly increased over the centuries. Their names were mentioned by the famous 12th-century Georgian odoscribers Shavteli and Chakhrukhadze. Vis and Ramin are mentioned twice in Kartlis Tskhovreba (Chronicle of Georgia); Shota Rustaveli refers to them three times in his brilliant poem. Love is understood by the author as an all-consuming passion. “He who is not in love,” he proclaims, “is not a man.” With the power of literary words, the author tries to influence the reader, to evoke sympathy for the victims of all-consuming love. The author considers the act of the old king Moabad, who married young Vis and darkened her life, to be immoral and unnatural. Vis's passionate love for the handsome Ramin is a natural consequence of her deep hatred for the old man Moabad, her protest against marriage with him. This is the concept of the work. The passion for this novel in Georgia is characteristic not only of the Middle Ages. Despite the destruction of the Visramiani manuscripts during the Mongol invasion, copies of the 17th and 18th centuries, which originate from the early Visramiani manuscripts, have reached us intact. They are stored in the Institute of Manuscripts of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR. As a result of searching and restoring the lists, the names Vis and Ramin came to life again. This translation was made by S. Iordanishvili from the Georgian academic publication “Visramiani”, published in 1938 and which was the result of a lot of work by Georgian scientists on critical studying and establishing the canonical text from manuscripts of the 17th–18th centuries. This translation was first published by our publishing house in 1949 under the editorship of Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR K. Kekelidze and is reproduced without changes. At the same time, the publishing house plans to release the academic publication “Visramiani”, equipped with a scientific commentary.
