About the book: 1986 / In the memoirs of I.Ya. Stolyarov, a wide panorama of the life of the peasants of the village of Karachun is given during the last third of the 19th century. The author is very familiar with the events he writes about, because... many of them reflect the facts of his biography. Stories from older family members about the past are organically included in the narrative. “Notes of a Russian Peasant” contain a wealth of material on the history of calendar holidays, folk beliefs, everyday Orthodoxy, material culture, local handicrafts. “Notes of a Russian Peasant” I.Ya. Stolyarov wrote in exile until the last days of his life. He did not have time to edit their text. All subsequent work on bringing the records into a specific system, editing the text, and compiling notes fell on his wife, Valeria Eduardovna Stolyarova. The first publication in Russian took place thanks to the Institute of Slavic Studies in Paris in 1986. It was supplied with extensive comments by V.E. Stolyarova and A. Berelovich and consisted of 202 pages. In French, “Notes” were published twice: in 1981 - by the Parisian publishing house Syntax, in 1992 - by the publishing house Pion. An abridged version of “Notes of a Russian Peasant” was published by the Moscow publishing house Sovremennik in 1989.
