About the book: 1959 / Notes by Y. K. Iosseliani "Fire in the Ocean" are autobiographical in nature. Captain of the first rank, Hero of the Soviet Union, famous submariner Yaroslav Konstantinovich Iosseliani was born and spent his childhood in the mountainous Svaneti. Georgians by origin, residents of mountainous Svaneti, due to many historical, geographical, and social reasons, found themselves separated from both the high Georgian and powerful Russian culture. The October Revolution brought to Svaneti a free and full-blooded life, which the freedom-loving Svans had dreamed of for centuries. The life path of the book’s heroes is a private but convincing example of the triumph of Lenin’s national policy. Some of the events and facts described in the book offered to the reader were previously used by the author in his work “Notes of a Submariner,” also based on autobiographical material. However, in the book “Fire in the Ocean” they are presented in a new, expanded, artistically generalized form, the scope of the narrative is significantly expanded. The names and surnames of the characters in the book, including our valiant submariners, with very few exceptions, are authentic.
