About the book: 2022 / The grandiose twenty-volume epic "Rougon-Macquart" by the classic of world literature Emile Zola describes, against a broad historical and everyday background, the life of several generations of one family. The first novel of the series “The Career of the Rougons” is a kind of prologue, telling about the origin of the Rougon-Macquart family. Most of the main characters of the cycle are introduced in the first novel, The Career of the Rougons. The final novel in the series, Dr. Pascal, has a long chapter that brings together the endings of the other novels. Since the books are not in chronological order (which also cannot be established independently), there is no “best sequence” for reading this literary cycle. At the same time, a number of novels are continuations of each other; the action of many of the books begins after the end of the Rougons' Career. There are chronological overlaps between the books, there are numerous recurring characters and some of them are "guests" in those novels that focus on specific family members.
