About the book: year / Little is known about Daniel, and everything known is conjectural. Researchers suggest that Daniel was tonsured in the Kiev-Pechersk Monastery, later became abbot of one of the monasteries of the Chernigov land and led the Russian pilgrims who made a “walk” to the Holy Land in 1104–1107. Y. M. Karamzin in his “History of the Russian State” suggested that “this traveler could be the Bishop of Yuryev Daniil, installed in 1113” (died in 1122). “The life and walk of Daniil, the abbot of the Russian land” is not only the most ancient description of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, but also one of the first most remarkable creations of ancient Russian literature. His language is capacious and colorful, his narration is inspired, his observations are rich and varied, his spiritual horizons are broad. “The Life and Walk of Daniel” was widespread and revered in Rus', as evidenced by more than 150 copies of it known today.
