MediaDB / «This is the basis: Why do we need mathematics in everyday life? Ian Stewart: download fb2, read online
About the book: year / The widespread use of computers can create the impression that mathematics is no longer needed, that today’s technologies make it possible to carry out the most complex computational operations in a fraction of a second. This naive idea prompted the famous popularizer of science Ian Stewart to show readers the not-so-obvious merits of his favorite discipline, because its role is by no means limited to calculations, and thanks to computers, which free us from monotonous work, we simply begin to do mathematics differently. Maybe It may seem that mathematics is out of fashion and outdated, but this view is erroneous. Without mathematics, the modern world would simply fall apart. To prove my point, I will show you its applications in politics and law, in kidney transplants and supermarket delivery, in Internet security, in movie special effects and in the manufacture of springs. We will see that medical scanners, digital photography, broadband communication channels and satellite navigation are unthinkable without mathematics; it helps us predict the results of climate change, protect ourselves from terrorists and Internet hackers. It is mathematics that is behind all the transformative technologies that make the 21st century completely different to the previous era. Without mathematics, digital photography, modern communications, and satellite navigation are unthinkable, and one cannot do without it when predicting the consequences of climate change. This series can go on and on, not forgetting to mention the humanities and art, politics and Internet security. In a word, the author believes, the need for this science is universal, it is the basis. Mathematicians have always been attentive to the practicality of methods for solving problems, although when things get stuck, everyone agrees that any method is better than nothing. From a purely theoretical point of view, being able to simply prove that a solution to a problem exists could be a major step forward. Why? Because if you are not sure that a solution exists, you can waste a lot of time searching for it. For whom the book will please those who love mathematics, will be useful to those who teach mathematics, will be useful to those who have already begun to understand mathematics... a mathematician is a person who notices opportunities for applying mathematics where others have not seen anything.
