About the book: 1919 / Keppel Stewart, MD and member of the Royal Society of Natural History, woke up with a start and found his whole body covered in cold sweat. The moon was shining through the window, but its light did not fall on the bed and, therefore, could not wake him. He lay there, listening for a while to every unfamiliar sound that could explain what had suddenly interrupted his usually sound sleep. Not a sound was heard from the lower floor of the house. The windows were wide open, and he could hear the vague sounds so common in London at night; Occasionally one could even hear the bumpers of wagons colliding on the sidings near the railway line leading to Brighton, where trains were being sorted, and at times the wail of sirens could be heard from the Thames. No other sounds were heard...
